237 Biblical Poetry in Translation. Spring; 3 credits (L-E). A study of the poetry of the Hebrew Bible as literature within the context of other ancient Near Eastern Poetry. Influence of biblical poetry on the Dead Sea Scrolls, New Testament, medieval Hebrew poetry, and Jewish and Christian liturgies. Crosslisted with Lit Trans, Jewish, and Religious Studies 237. Prerequisite: None. Open to Freshman. Honors credit available--see instructor. 332 Prophets of the Bible. Spring; 4 credits (L-E). An introduction to the thought, literature, and history of the prophets of ancient Israel (in English). Crosslisted with Jewish, Lit Trans, and Religious Studies 332. Prerequisite: Open to Freshman. Honors credit available--see instructor.
343 Israeli Fiction in Translation. Spring; 3 credits (optional discussion is closed) (e-L-I). Major writers, trends and themes in Israeli fection from pre-State period to the present. Meets with Jewish Studies367 and Lit Trans 367. Prerequisite: Open to Freshman. Selected readings in Hebrew for majors. Honors credit available--see instructor.
351 Religions of the Ancient Near East. Spring; 2 credits (H-D). The gods in ancient Israel, Egypt, Mesopotamia and Canaan; their stories, deeds, characters, and demands, and how they were worshiped. Crosslisted with Religious Studies 351. Prerequisite: Sophomore standing. Honors credit available--see instructor.
371 Topics in Jewish Civilization: History-telling in the Bible. Spring; 3 credits (H-D). Topics vary each semester. Crosslisted with Jewish 371-Lecture 1 and meets with Religious Studies 400-Lecture 1. Prerequisite: Open to Freshman and all undergrads.
377 Jewish Cultural History. Spring; 4 credits (e-H-I). Survey of Jewish cultural history from the Biblical to the Talmudic and early Muslim periods; and its interaction with other cultures, including Hellenistic, Roman, and Muslim. Crosslisted with Jewish and Religious Studies 377. Prerequisite: sophomore standing. Honors credit available--see instructor. 446 Holy Places and Sacred Times in Rabbinic Literature. Spring; 3-4 credits (H-I). Examines the ways that space and time were understood and made meaningful by the rabbis of Late Antiquity, whose thought and practice have influenced the religious life of most Jews to the present day. Crosslisted with Jewish and Religious Studies 446. Prerequisite: For lecture: sophmore standing or consent of instructor. For optional discussion: Hebrew 302 or Hebrew 324 or consent of instructor.
