Symbols in the the "L" column show course level. Sixty credits of advanced and intermediate level courses are required for the L&S BA/BS degrees. E=Elementary, I=Intermediate, A=Advanced, D=Intermediate or Advanced.

211 Introduction to Judaism. Fall; 4 credits (HEC). General introduction to Judaism covering the biblical, classical rabbinic, medieval, and modern periods. Crosslisted with Jewish Studies and Religious Studies. Prerequisite: none. Open to Freshman. Honors credit available--see instructor.

217 Introduction to Biblical Literature. Fall; 4 credits (LIC). Introduction to the literature and literary history of the Old Testament, Apocrypha, Dead Sea Scrolls, Talmud, and Midrashim. Meets with Literature in Translation/Jewish Studies/Religious Studies 227. Selected readings in Hebrew for majors. Writing Intensive. Prerequisite: none. Open to Freshman. Not recommended for Graduate students. Honors credit available--see instructor.

237 Biblical Poetry in Translation. Fall; 3 credits (LEC). A study of the poetry of the Hebrew Bible as literature within the context of other ancient Near Eastern poetry. Influence of biblical poetry on the Dead Sea Scrolls, New Testament, medieval Hebrew poetry, and Jewish and Christian liturgies. Crosslisted with Jewish Studies, Literature in Translation, and Religious Studies. Prequisite: Open to Freshman.
328 Classical Rabbinic Literature in Translation. Fall; 3 credits (LIC). Introduction to the literature of the Classical Rabbinic or Talmudic period of Judaism (2nd to 7th centuries CE). Historical and intellectual background; the interrelation of liturygy, legal and non-legal literture. Crosslisted with Jewish Studies, Literature in Translation, and Religious Studies. Prerequisite: Open to Freshman.
368 The Bible in the Middle Ages. 3 credits (LDC). Medieval Bible and its shaping effect on medieval culture. Crosslisted with Medieval Studies, History, and Religious Studies. Prerequisite: Sophmore standing or consent of instructor.
371 Topics in Jewish Civilization. Topic will be "Lamentations & Its Interpreters"  3 credits (HDC). Prerequisite: Open to Freshman. Crosslisted with Jewish Studies 371-Lecture 1 and meets with Religious Studies 400-Lecture 1.
