217 Introduction to Biblical Literature. Fall; 4 credits (I-L). Introduction to the literature and literary history of the Old Testament, Apocrypha, Dead Sea Scrolls, Talmud, and Midrashim. Meets with Literature in Translation/Jewish Studies/Religious Studies 227. Selected readings in Hebrew for majors. Writing Intensive. Prerequisite: none. Open to Freshman. 237 Biblical Poetry in Translation. 3 credits (L-E). A study of the Hebrew Bible as literature within the context of other ancient Near Eastern poetry. Influence of biblical poetry on the Dead Sea Scrolls, New Testament, medieval Hebrew poetry, and Jewish and Christian liturgies. Crosslisted with Jewish Studies, Literature in Translation, and Religious Studies. Prerequisite: none. Open to Freshman. Honors credit available--see instructor.
241 Introduction to Biblical Archaeology. Fall; 4 credits (H-E). An overview of archaeology and its relationship to understanding the biblical world. Crosslisted with Jewish Studies. Prerequisite: none. Open to Freshman. Honors credit available--see instructor.  368 The Bible in the Middle Ages. 3 credits (L-D). Medieval Bible and its shaping effect on medieval culture. 371 Topics in Jewish Civilization. Topic will be "Job and the Problem of Evil."  3 credits (H-D). Prerequisite: none. Open to Freshman. Crosslisted with Jewish Studies. Honors credit available--see instructor.
376 Ancient Jewish Psychology and Ethics. 3 credits (H-I). Examines the views of ethics and self-cultivation held by rabbis of late antiquity and the early medieval period. Focuses on primary texts in translation but also includes theoretical and comparitive studies of the topic. Crosslisted with Jewish Studies and Religious Studies. Prerequisite: none. 451 Biblical Archaeology. Fall ; 3 credits ((H-I). Meets with Hebrew 241. Extra reading and paper required. Prerequisite: MUST be a graduate student in the Hebrew Department.
473 Jewish Civilization in Medieval Spain (in English). 3 credits (H-I). Cultural, political, economic and scientific contributions of the Jews in medieval Islamic and Christian Spain (711-1492). Emphasis on interaction of the Jews with the general society. Crosslisted with Jewish Studies and Medieval Studies. Prerequisite: Sophmore standing. Honors credit available--see instructor.
