Course Description
Adam and Eve and a talking serpent; the Great Flood and a floating zoo;
Abraham’s sacrifice of Isaac; Jacob’s tantalizing stew that changed the
course of nations; Joseph and the amazing technicolor dreamcoat. The
book of Genesis has captivated imaginations for millennia, in part
because of the powerful nature of its storytelling, in part because it
contains foundational stories of major world religions, and in part
because it provides some ancient answers for timeless questions of
humanity: Who are we? Where did we come from? Why are we here? Why is
there evil in the world? Genesis is a collection of stories of
beginnings: the world’s, mankind’s, and Israel’s. These stories helped
define Israel as a people, rooting them in the past and speaking to
their future.
This course is a study of key stories in Genesis from a literary
perspective. The course places the book in its ancient Near Eastern
context, but focuses on studying the stories as the book itself tells
them. To a lesser extent, it considers some ways in which these stories
have been interpreted in Judaism and Christianity; it gives particular
attention to understanding these interpretations within their own
unique contexts.
Goals and Objectives
These goals will be met in the following ways:
Required Texts:
Recommended Texts: You will find a good commentary helpful for understanding cultural issues. The Cambridge Bible Commentary is very readable, but your best deal is to buy the older edition(s) (see below). The series was rereleased in 2008, but the new edition is quite pricey.
Assignments/Grading:
Grading Scale:
100–92 = A
91–89 = AB
88–82 = B
81–79 = BC
78–70 = C
69–60 = D
Integrity: Violations of standards for academic honesty are subject to academic sanctions: e.g., cheating on exams, submitting collaborative and/or others’ work as one’s own, falsifying course work, stealing examinations or course materials, submitting work previously submitted in another course (unless specifically approved by the instructor), falsifying documents or signing an instructor’s or administrator’s name to any document or form, or aiding another student in any of these actions. Cheating on exams or assignments will be dealt with under University of Wisconsin System Administrative code, chapter 14. For more information see http://www.wisc.edu/students/saja/misconduct/UWS14.html.
Schedule: N.B. The schedule is subject to change (with due notice).
