Course Objectives:
1. To increase fluency and accuracy in reading biblical Hebrew
literature through (a) vocabulary building, and (b) reading and
discussion of the grammar and syntax of selected texts from the Hebrew
Bible
2. To gain an appreciation and critical understanding of various
literary genres in the Hebrew Bible
Course Requirements:
1. Attendance: You are expected to attend each class. Three unexcused
absences are allowed. Each absence in excess of three will result in a
5% reduction of your daily assignments grade.
2. Assignments: You are expected to complete the assignments for each
class. Failure to do so will exclude you from participating in the
class discussion that day and will be reflected in your daily
assignments grade.
3. Quizzes: A quiz will be given at the beginning of class each Friday.
Please see the quiz schedule, which I have posted online. Missed
quizzes will be recorded as a zero. There are no make-ups except by
special permission. The lowest quiz grade will be dropped when
calculating your final grade.
4. Exams: Midterm on Wed Mar 16, and Final on 7:45 AM, Tues
May 10. The exams will cover the texts read in class, Hebrew
Grammar, and vocabulary. You must take the final at the scheduled time.
5. Readings: You must present two oral readings. The first must be 20+
verses of a poetic text. The second must be a memorized recitation of
either Deuteronomy 6:4-9 or Psalm 23. These are due before March 18
and April 29 respectively.
