GUIDELINES

Welcome to Hebrew 301. The following are some
basic guidelines for the work we will be doing in this course. If, at
any time, you have a need to discuss any aspect of the course – or the
Hebrew program with me, I will be happy to do so. This is particularly
important for people who discover that they are having a problem of
some sort in the course. Don’t let the problem fester. Talk to me about
it. My office is 1342 Van Hise. My phone number there is 262-3204. My
e-mail address is: gmorahg@wisc.edu.
My office hours are: Monday 11:00-12:00 and Wednesday
3:45-4:45. If these time turn out to be impossible
for you, we can always schedule a meeting at another time.
301 STUDY GUIDE
The Study Guide for the course is required and can
be purchased at Bob’s Copy Shop in University Square.
READING ASSIGNMENTS
1.
The readings for this class are designed to be
challenging. All readings are assigned in advance and must be fully
prepared at home. You should come to class having understood the
reading to the very best of your ability. Be prepared to discuss the
reading in Hebrew. Make good use of the glossaries in the Study Guide
and of your dictionary.
2.
Reading preparation and class participation are important
elements in determining your grade for the course.
WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS
1.
Written assignments consist of Hebrew language
exercises and essays. Assignments are due on the Monday of the
following week, unless another day is announced. Late assignments will
not be accepted unless prior permission is given.
2.
All assignments (both in Hebrew and in
English) should have generous margins and written on alternate lines
of ruled paper. This is essential for effective comments and
corrections.
3.
All assignments and quizzes must be kept in a pocket-folder
which is handed in each time a new assignment is due. This makes it
possible for me to have all your previous work before me each time I
read a new assignment. The assignment folder is a great help in keeping
constant rack of your progress. A complete assignment folder is
required in order to complete this course. Do not keep any material
other than your assignments and quizzes in this folder.
4.
An assignment is considered complete only after
you have successfully corrected all the errors that you made.
VOCABULARIES AND QUIZZES
1.
The vocabulary lists in the Study Guide will
be assigned on a regular (usually weekly) basis. There will be a quiz
on the Monday following the assignment of each even-numbered vocabulary
list. (Usually every other week).
2.
The quizzes are cumulative. Each
quiz will include all the vocabulary and grammar material covered to
date.
ATTENDANCE
1.
Since a major portion of the grade for this
course is determined by class preparation and participation, attendance
in this class is mandatory. If you have a justifiable reason for
being absent from a class, be sure to discuss this with me.
2.
Remember: This includes Fridays as well as
Mondays and Wednesdays.
GRADES
The grading in this course is based on the grades of
the quizzes, essays and homework assignments as well as on class
preparation and participation. Progress is taken into account. Special
weight is given to your level of competence and accomplishment in the
later stages of the course
