Department of Hebrew and Semitic Studies

Hebrew 202 Syllabus, January 2007

Haya Yuchtman

Welcome to Hebrew 202! I hope you enjoyed the winter break and are ready to continue in our adventure of uncovering the secrets of the Hebrew language and Israeli culture.

Texts:

1. Encounters in Modern Hebrew Level 3 (new books only!)

2. Reading Packet can be purchased at Bob's Copy Shop 616 University Ave.

3. Hebrew Verb Tables (recommended)

4. Hebrew-English Dictionary

General:

1. Attendance and participation in all classes is mandatory. Absence from more than 4 classes will result in a loss of a grade. If you miss a class, you still need to hand in the assignment due that day.

2. All reading assignments should be prepared before coming to class with the help of the glossary and a dictionary. You can listen to some of the Readings online. Directions to reach the online site are in the Hoveret.

3. Office Hours: Monday, 3:20-4:20 PM, Room 1356 Van Hise Hall, and by appointment. Telephone: 262-2967. Email: yuchtman@wisc.edu

Quizzes:

There will be four quizzes (each quiz consists of two parts). They will cover the grammatical material and the Readings.

Written Assignments:

Written assignments consist of:

Language exercises and comprehension questions.

You should do the language exercises in the book: "Encounters in Modern Hebrew Level 3". A list of the required exercises is found in your Hoveret

Oral Presentation:

You will be expected to give an in-class oral presentation at the end of the semester. Guidelines are found in your Hoveret.

Folders:

The quizzes and written assignments must be kept in a pocket-folder. The folder helps in keeping constant track of your progress. Do not keep any material other than your written assignments and quizzes in this folder. An assignment is considered complete only after you have successfully corrected all the errors you made. You should hand in your folder for final evaluation at the end of the semester.

Grades

Final grade will be based on your:

- Quizzes

- Written Assignments

- Oral Presentation

- Preparation of homework

- Participation in class

Mandatory:

- Attendance

- A complete Folder (with all quizzes, written assignments, and summaries of Oral Presentations).

I wish you a successful and enjoyable semester!
