Welcome to the second semester of Biblical Hebrew!  This semester we continue our adventure in language learning.  Let me remind you of our general goals for this year: (‘In all toil there is profit,’ Prov 14:23):

-     To read Hebrew narrative by sight come May.

-     To see the importance of reading the Bible in Hebrew, not just in translation.

-    To enjoy reading Hebrew (so that you spend your summer reading Hebrew for fun!)

To further these goals this semester we will reinforce the grammar learned last semester and move onto the Hebrew “weak” verbs and aspects of Biblical Hebrew syntax.  We will also spend a lot of time reading Biblical Hebrew narrative, with appreciation for its literary dimensions.

Requirements:

            1)  Attendance is required.  If you must miss a class, it is your responsibility to get notes from another student and be prepared for the next class session.

            2)  Exercises and translation will be assigned daily.  We will go over these assignments at the beginning of the next class period and I will collect some of them.  Simply handing in these assignments will be worth 10% of your grade.  These assignments cannot be handed in outside of class, except by special permission.

3)  Quizzes.  You may consider every quiz cumulative (especially when it comes to vocabulary).  No surprises at all on the quizzes.  Just know everything!  The quiz will start at the beginning of the hour, so please do not be late.  There will be no make-up quizzes (except by very special permission), but your lowest quiz score will be dropped.

4)  We will have a mid-term (WED. MARCH 08) and a final exam (10:05 A.M. SUN. MAY 07).  Both exams will be cumulative.  You must take the final exam at the scheduled time.

            6)  Oral recitation:  It is important that you gain the ability early on in your study of Biblical Hebrew to not only understand the grammar of the language and translate, but also to read Hebrew aloud fluently.  To encourage you in this you must prepare a text (to be announced) and read it for me during office hours (or by appointment).  I will pass out a schedule for these readings in early April, but feel free to complete the assignment early.
