SUMMER 2005: Intensive Hebrew Program at UW Madison

As part of 2005 UW-Madison Summer School Program, the Department of Hebrew and Semitic Studies is pleased to offer two new Modern Hebrew courses, each of which will be equivalent to one semester's academic credit.

The first of the two courses, Hebrew 101, is intended for beginners, with little or no knowledge of Hebrew. Beginning with the Hebrew alphabet, the course will provide students with the fundamentals of the Hebrew language. By the end of the course, students should be proficient in reading, writing, and conversing in simple Hebrew.

The second course, Hebrew 102,  is a direct continuation of Hebrew 101, expanding upon the knowledge gained in the first course. Students will have the opportunity to enhance their skills in reading, writing, and conversation.

Classroom instruction will be supplemented by sessions in the Multimedia Language Lab, which provides students the chance to practice their conversation skills. In addition to the basic knowledge of the language, both classes will cover aspects of contemporary Israeli culture. This component will be facilitated by Israeli films, Israeli cuisine, and guest speakers.

The courses will be open to current UW students, incoming freshman, and students from other colleges and universities. Those in the community wishing to attend one or both of these courses are welcome; UW Summer School registration is required.

The courses will be taught by Haya Yuchtman, Senior Lecturer in the Hebrew Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Schedule:

Hebrew 101: June 13-July 10, 2005,  Monday through Thursday 12:30-3:40 p.m. in 386 Van Hise Hall

Hebrew 102: July 11-August 7, 2005 Monday through Thursday 12:30-3:40 p.m. in 355 Van Hise Hall
